Belt-driven air compressors depend on correct belt tension and pulley alignment. Too much tension overloads bearings, while too little causes slippage, heat and loss of airflow, and misalignment accelerates wear on both belts and pulleys.
Checking tension
- Use a tension gauge for repeatable results
- Measure deflection under a known force
- Compare with the belt manufacturer table
- Re-tension new belts after running in
Alignment
Check pulley alignment with a straight edge or laser alignment tool across the pulley faces, and correct any angular or parallel offset. Misalignment causes rapid belt edge wear and vibration that reaches the bearings.
Maintenance
Inspect belts at the scheduled interval and replace matched sets together. Keep spare belts clean and dry, and record tension and alignment readings so changes over time are visible.
