Electronics manufacturing is unforgiving about air quality. Pick-and-place machines, component feeding, board cleaning, testing and pneumatic controls all use compressed air, and a single oil droplet or moisture film can cause shorts, corrosion and batch failure.
Purity requirements
Electronics and PCB lines generally need ISO 8573-1 Class 1:1:1 with Class 0 oil, plus a very low dew point to keep moisture away from sensitive boards. Adsorption dryers are standard, and point-of-use filtration protects the most critical tools.
Why dryness matters
Moisture causes oxidation on pads and components, weakens solder joints and can bridge fine-pitch traces. Dry air also prevents electrostatic issues caused by humid conditions and keeps vision systems and feeders operating consistently.
System design
- Oil-free compressor, ideally with variable speed for fluctuating demand
- Adsorption dryer sized for worst-case inlet temperature
- Coalescing and particulate filters at the compressor room and point of use
- Clean, non-shedding pipework such as stainless steel or treated aluminium
