Cold weather creates specific problems for air compressors: freezing condensate, thick lubricant and increased condensation in the air system. Preparing the machine and the downstream equipment keeps it starting reliably through winter.
Risks
- Frozen condensate drains and lines
- Thick oil slowing the start
- Condensation freezing in outdoor pipework
- Icing at dryers and receivers
Precautions
Keep the compressor room above freezing, heat the condensate drains or use trace heating, and check that oil and coolant are rated for low temperature. Drain receivers and filters daily, and insulate outdoor air lines.
Start-up
Allow the machine to warm before full load, and confirm the control system and safety devices operate correctly after a cold start. In severe climates, an oil heater or room heater prevents the most common winter failures.
