Both scroll and screw compressors can deliver oil-free air, but they are built for different flow ranges and duty profiles. Choosing the right one avoids paying for capacity you never use or running a machine past its comfortable limit.
Oil-free scroll compressors
Scroll machines compress air between two interleaved spirals. They are quiet, compact, vibration-free and naturally oil-free, which makes them ideal for laboratories, dental and medical air, small food plants and instrumentation up to roughly 40 kW. They are best at continuous or near-continuous duty rather than frequent stop-start cycles.
Oil-free screw compressors
Screw machines scale from small packages to large industrial stations and handle higher flows and pressures with good part-load efficiency, especially with variable speed drive. They are the standard choice for food, beverage, pharmaceutical and electronics production above the scroll range.
Making the choice
If your demand is small, constant and quiet, a scroll compressor is usually the simpler and more economical machine. If demand is larger or variable, an oil-free screw compressor with VSD offers the flexibility and efficiency the process needs.
