Tunnel construction combines drilling, muck removal, ventilation and control in a confined underground environment. The compressed air system must be rugged, reliable and sized for the full face of the tunnel.
Key applications
- Drilling jumbos and rock drills
- Shotcrete spraying and support installation
- Ventilation and dust suppression
- Muck conveyor and segment handling
- Control and instrumentation
Selection factors
Drilling needs high flow at 7–25 bar, often from diesel portable or electric screw compressors at the portal. Shotcrete and ventilation need separate, steady supplies. Control air must be dry and oil-free for reliable actuation.
Reliability
A tunnel cannot afford air failure, so provide redundancy and remote monitoring. Protect equipment from dust and water, and confirm altitude and temperature derating for deep or high-elevation projects.
