The air dryer is the part of a compressed air system most likely to be neglected until it fails, and then the damage has already reached the tools and product. Most dryer failures are preventable with routine care.
Common causes
- Overloading beyond rated flow or temperature
- Dirty condenser or blocked cooling airflow
- Failed condensate drain flooding the separator
- Refrigerant leak reducing cooling capacity
- Saturated desiccant bed past its service life
Preventive maintenance
Check and clean the condenser, verify the drain operates, and monitor the dew point at the outlet. For desiccant dryers, replace the desiccant on schedule and keep the pre-filters clean so oil does not poison the bed. A dew-point sensor gives early warning of degradation.
The cost of neglect
A failing dryer lets water into the network, causing rust, tool damage and product contamination that cost far more than the service. Adding a dew-point monitor and a simple maintenance schedule protects the whole system.
