Compressed air filters remove particles, water and oil, but an incorrectly sized filter either fails to clean the air or wastes energy through pressure drop. Sizing the filtration system starts with the flow and the required air quality.
Sizing by flow and pressure
Choose filters rated for the maximum system flow at the working pressure, applying the manufacturer correction factors for pressure. An undersized filter chokes the system, while an oversized filter costs more up front and still needs correct element selection.
Building the filtration train
- General particulate filter after the separator
- Coalescing filter before the dryer and at point of use
- Activated carbon filter for oil vapour removal
- Sterile filter for food and pharmaceutical contact air
Pressure drop management
Monitor differential pressure and replace elements before they load too far, because a clogged filter increases energy cost. Fit gauges or indicators on each stage so element changes happen on condition rather than guesswork.
