Chemical plants use compressed air as a utility and sometimes as a process input, so the system must meet strict purity, reliability and safety requirements. Instrument air, process air and conveying air are usually separate tiers with different specifications.
Air quality tiers
- Instrument air — very dry, oil-free, -40°C dew point
- Process air — purity matched to the reaction or purging duty
- Conveying air — low pressure, high volume for powders
Key applications
Control valve actuation, pneumatic conveying of powders, reactor purging, tank blanketing support and maintenance tools all rely on compressed air. Some processes use air as an oxidation or stripping medium, requiring careful specification.
Safety and specification
Classified areas may need special electrical ratings and material selection. Redundancy and continuous monitoring are essential because an air failure can trigger a process upset. Corrosion-resistant components suit aggressive chemical atmospheres.
